VENOUS ABLATION
Prior to Procedure:
- Eat a meal. Does not need be large, but do not have an empty stomach.
- Take ALL medications as you normally would (NO BLOOD THINNERS 24 HRS PRIOR TO ABLATION).
- Shower or bathe, shaving is fine, but avoid lotion or moisturizers.
- You may drive yourself unless otherwise instructed.
- Plan on being active after the procedure.
- You need to purchase thigh high compression stockings (20-30 mmHG) which can be purchased at a medical supply store or specialty pharmacy.

After the Procedure
- You will be wrapped with a bandage. Do not remove, do not get the wraps wet. You will remove the bandage after 48 hours.
- Once the wrapping is removed, you may resume normal showering.
- You will wear your compression hose for 14 days. Put them on first thing in the morning, take them off to sleep.
- You may remove the stocking for the following reasons: Shower, Exercise, Swimming, Sleeping.
- Generally, patients experience minimal to no pain following the procedure. If you experience pain, feel free to take whatever medication you generally take for a headache. If the pain is severe, call our office immediately.
- Walk, walk, walk, and then walk more. Movement is essential for fast healing and to maximize the procedure’s benefits. You may also ride a bike, stair machine, elliptical.
- Avoid prolonged standing or sitting, take breaks, walk, walk, walk.
- You will have a safety check - a Venous Doppler, one week AND then one month after the ablation. After both venous dopplers are completed, you will follow up with Dr/NP. Please keep all these appointments!
